Bladensburg Branch Library
The Bladensburg Branch Library in Bladensburg, Maryland now covers an impressive 22,834 square feet. This is a significant upgrade from the original 7,300-square-foot building, which was constructed in 1925 and had become functionally outdated.
To better serve the needs of this local community, East Coast Metal systems partnered with Rich Moe Enterprises, LLC (General Contractor), Gant Burnett Architecture (Architect), and Scheibel Construction (Installer) to build a much needed modern, sustainable library. This library is the first building in Prince George's County, Maryland to achieve LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, a prestigious acknowledgment of its environmentally friendly design. Notable sustainability features of the library include solar panels and electric car charging stations.
We believe this project highlights East Coast Metal Systems' exceptional metal craftsmanship, thanks to its unique product. Our team custom-fabricated zinc flatlock panels in diamond shapes, capturing the spirit of local historical influences. The exterior design, created by Gant Brunnett Architects, draws inspiration from the area's maritime history, resulting in a striking, sweeping design that echoes the form of traditional sailing ships.
The building also includes modern amenities such as a maker space and both indoor and outdoor fireplaces, with East Coast Metal Systems providing custom-fabricated standing seam zinc siding for the fireplace walls. Inside, the library's nautical theme is brought to life with distinctive features. The children’s area welcomes visitors with a bowsprit sculpture and an authentic ship’s wheel, creating an engaging and immersive experience. A wooden dock and vibrant wave designs further enhance the atmosphere. With its unique design and cutting-edge sustainability features, the new Bladensburg public library is set to be a standout addition to the community.
Metal was selected to help bring to life a nautical theme that celebrates the local community's maritime history. Because zinc material is soft, it proved to be the perfect fit to bring this vision to life.
