IMPs Give Design Life To A Colorado Civic Center
A cornerstone of the city that brings five different departments together under one roof.
Highlights
- The civic center is home to city offices, the police department, a municipal library and a fitness center
- IMPs provided the ability to do the entire enclosure using predominantly one material
- KarrierPanels gave the exterior skin a sophisticated look
Challenge
The design team faced two significant challenges. The first was that they needed to fit several different municipal departments, each with their own unique needs and space requirements, into one building with a limited floorplan.
The second challenge was creating a sustainable design with a focus on longevity, but also keeping the project under budget. Luckily, Kingspan KarrierPanels excelled at both tasks.
Solution
Metal played a key role in meeting these challenges. To save thousands of dollars, the design team used a pre-engineered metal building system. Using IMPs also addressed sustainable design initiatives, as the panels used are GREENGUARD Gold Certified.
The Edgewater Civic Center uses the KarrierPanel Barrier Wall System, a universal wall barrier alternative to traditional multi-component wall systems. The panels serve as a rainscreen and allow designers the flexibility to utilize any number of facades, which connect to the KarrierPanel by Kingspan’s KarrierRail, which securely and safely transmits loads to the structural supports behind the insulated panel.
Influence
At first, city officials weren’t sold on the use of metal in the design of the civic center, thinking it would give the building an industrial look. However, once they saw the different colors and textures the design team was going to use, their concerns dissolved.
Design materials include Kingspan insulated metal panels, fiber cement panels and fiber cement planks that provide different looks and textures. Regardless of the façade materials, the KarrierPanel ensures a high level of energy efficiency by eliminating thermal-bridging energy losses associated with standard stud/cavity insulation construction.
A community center, municipal office and space for local residents to gather, the Edgewater Civic Center was created to stand the test of time.
“The panels provided us the ability to do a two-story gym, skin the entire enclosure using predominately one material, and allowed us a very energy-efficient and cost-efficient approach.”
