Ensuring Safe Storage
Extra Space Storage, the second largest operator of self-storage facilities in the United States, is in the middle of expanding its national portfolio. In 2020, this included a new development in North Hollywood designed for individuals seeking a safe space to store their belongings.
When it came time to select the right external cladding, designers chose Metl-Span architectural metal panels to deliver a modern design with exceptional protection.
Tight Seal, Eye-Catching Appeal
To ensure a climate-controlled space with a clean aesthetic, the design team needed sleek insulated metal panels. They also sought a reliable partner that delivered a high-quality product on time.
“The lead time for the Metl-Span panels worked well for our schedule. The dimensions need to be precise, and having everything come correctly and not having to wait for panels meant we could get it all done on the project timeline,” said Fred Hanhauser, project manager at DAI General Contracting, the general contractor for the development.
The design featured 4,000 square feet of Metl-Span two-inch CF Architectural Flat panels in Silversmith and a custom lime green that alternate in vertical and horizontal application for an exterior that is unique and durable.
“The advantage to using Metl-Span panels is how flat they stay, even with big panels. The colors were mixed and matched to create the design, and the Metl-Span panels made that alternation easy to install,” said Dale Gronewold, president at Emerald Metal Products, the installer on the project. “It looks awesome and the finished product came out really nice.”
Secured and Protected
Metl-Span architectural insulated metal panels provide a high-profile, smooth appearance and eliminate the need for metal flashings. The panels boast a polyurethane core encapsulated by two steel facings for an all-in-one building envelope solution, negating the need for additional insulation.
The Metl-Span panels are designed to meet installation code needs, achieve unprecedented R-value to meet climate control needs and are compatible with structural systems of self-storage buildings.
Climate-control units protect customer’s belongings from extreme heat and cold, as well as serving as moisture protection. Metl-Span architectural flat panels accommodate these needs with impermeable faces and built-in thermal breaks that create a solid membrane on all sides of the panel.
Space Available
The North Hollywood Extra Space Storage facility opened in 2020. The Metl-Span panels were installed in four weeks during four months of construction.
