Julia M Carson Transit Center
The Julia M Carson Transit Center, also known as IndyGO or the Indianapolis Downtown Transit Center, is the city’s main terminal for public transportation and is home to 26 different bus routes. The facility acts as the main hub for Indianapolis city busses as well as the Greyhound terminal featuring indoor waiting areas and departure screens. The project is in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, IN and incorporates over 24,000 square feet of fabricated metal panels. East Coast Metal Systems (ECMS) supplied custom anodized aluminum plate panels, both 16 gauge and 18 gauge stainless steel soffit and wall panels, integrated coping, and both interior and exterior beam enclosures.
Over the course of the project, East Coast Metal Systems faced the challenge of working with stainless steel, which is difficult to customize, and with the underlying structure which was out of alignment. Axis Architecture was looking for a geometrical aesthetic using out of the ordinary materials which ultimately helped the building stand out. After a lot of hard work, ECMS was able to help the architect achieve their vision with a fully customized plate panel system.
“The most interesting aspect is the shape of the design. Its use of large sweeping curves and tight radius corners achieved a very modern look. The materials used were fabricated utilizing a custom designed hidden fastener and open joint system. This was a challenge in itself as the system had to be developed to meet the desired appearance and required performance. Overall, it is just a really interesting project” said East Coast Metal Systems Project Manager John Hyde. The completion of the building was a big deal for the city and its dignitaries. The Julia M Carson Transit Center has quickly become the epicenter of modernization within the city.
