Muscogee (Creek) Nation Community Hospital

The Project

The Muscogee (Creek) Indians are an Indigenous Nation whose roots in Oklahoma date back to the 1800’s. The Nation provides a variety of services for its 80,000 members, including health care.

The Nation built its Muscogee (Creek) Nation Community Hospital in Okemah, Oklahoma, to replace its outdated hospital that was built in 1948. The new 118,000-square foot hospital has a 14-bed emergency department, two operating rooms, 24 outpatient clinic exam rooms, 25 inpatient beds, as well as a variety of specialty services. The Nation faced a common challenge on this project – how to get the design it wanted without exceeding its budget.

"There's a little psychology in choosing the color schemes because you want to have a calming effect. It makes the patients less anxious and gives you a better reading on blood pressures and things like that." - Muscogee (Creek) Nation Principal Chief James Floyd

Keeping costs low

Using different panel thicknesses was a way to keep costs down for the hospital. The majority of the panels used on this project are 2”; however, 1” panels were used in sections that cover an insulated interior wall. The thinner panels are more budget-friendly, without sacrificing aesthetics or R-value since they’re on an insulated wall.

Engineering a great design

The signature design of the building is its sweeping curved front. Using curved panels would have driven the cost up significantly, so Kingspan engineered the design to use flat panels to cover the sweeping façade. Another key element is a chameleon effect created by using several different colors on the panels. Kingspan spent nearly a year trying out hundreds of paint samples to come up with the perfect color combination that would achieve the desired effect. Kingspan panels can be color-matched with a full spectrum of vibrant colors available. The high-performance coatings are highly resistant to corrosion, UV light, abrasion and impacts and are maintenance-free for up to 30 years. Beyond colors, Kingspan panels are also available in a variety of finishes – available looks include granite, copper, rustic, woodgrain and even camo.
